ABSTRACT

Chrysin is a natural and active biological component which is extracted from plants, honey and propolis. Chrysin has anti-inflammatory, anticancer and antioxidant propertis. This study was done to evaluate the effect of chrysin on AGS human gastric cancer cell line. In this descriptive - analytic study, chrysin was dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide [DMSO] and the cytotoxic effects of concentrations of 10, 15, 20, 30, 40 ,50, 60, 70, 80, and 100 µM/ml of chrysin on AGS cells was evaluated. Viability of the cells was determined with MTT assay after 24, 48 and 72 hours and compared to controls. Chrysin inhibited the growth and proliferation of human gastric cancer AGS cell line. The antiproliferative effect of chrysin was dose and time dependent. The IC50 values were determined for 60, 30 and 20 µM, in incubation time of 24, 48 and 72 hour, respectively [P<0.05]. Chrysin proved to have antiproliferative activity on human gastric cancer cells in culture medium

ABSTRACT

Constraint-induce movement therapy is one of the treatment methods to treat those who have stroke disorders. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of constraint-induced movement therapy [CIMT] on quality of life, function and range of motion of upper extremity of patients with stroke. This study was conducted in 15 patients in accordance to random clinical trial during the treatment operation, the patients were asked to restrict their upper extremity movement with orthopedics sling for 3 days per week and each day for 8 hours. They were asked to practice on affected upper extremity for 2 hours while their hands were restricted. Additionally, the present study was conducted for 6 weeks. The statistical analysis illustrated that quality of life was significantly changed which measured by SF36 test [p=0.008]. Furthermore, the upper extremity function which was assessed by Box and Black test was statistically analyzed by t-coupled; in this regard, it showed a significant change when the treatment ended up [p=0.009]. However, active range of motions in wrist extension and elbow extension did not significantly changed [p=0.227]. Based on the results, it can be implied that constraint-induce movement therapy is an effective method for improvement of life quality and the upper extremity function .Three mechanisms are discussed: involvement of non used affected limbs, neural plasticity in CNS, and amelioration of mental and physical health of patients can be resulted in life quality and patients' hand improvement

ABSTRACT

Drug abuse is one of the most important public health problems worldwide as in Iran. The aim of present study was to determine whether opium addiction can affect bone mineral density or not. Fifty opium addicted and 50 non-addicted volunteer men aged between 25-45 were enrolled. The subjects with positive history of other osteoporosis risk factors were excluded. The vertebral bone density and potential confounders [age, cigarette smoking and body mass index] were measured in all subjects. Twenty six percent of non-addicted vs. 56% of addicted subjects had vertebral osteopenia. According to adjusted ORs, addiction to opium [OR: 3.08, CI95% 1.20-7.92] and age [OR: 1.11 CI95% 1.03-1.20] were significantly related to vertebral bone loss. Opium addicted patients were more susceptible to bone loss than non-addicted individuals. So, early screening and conducting prevention programs should be taken into consideration for this high risk group

ABSTRACT

Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi is the causative pathogen of typhoid fever. Morbidity and mortality rates of the disease are 16x106 and 6x105 cases per year, respectively. Proper diagnosis of the disease and its suitable treatment have critical roles in morbidity and mortality reduction, especially in the developing countries. The traditional methods for detection of the organism are time consuming with low sensitivity. The aim of the present study is to design a new polymerase chain reaction [PCR] method for rapid detection of the organism. Target specific viaB genes were used for primer designing using Generunner j software. PCR tests were sat up using the standard Salmonella typhi genome. Besides, specificity of the method was determined using negative control bacterial genomes. For construction of positive control, determination of sensitivity of the method and limit of the detection, PCR products were cloned in a pTZ57RT plasmid vector. The agarose gel electrophoresis of PCR products showed 441 bands for the viaB genes. PCR tests for control negative genomes did not create any band on the agarose gel. Results of PCR, enzymatic digestion and sequencing confirmed the cloning process and the positive control construct. Considering the disadvantages of the classic methods for detection of the organism and the advantages of the molecular methods, the diagnostic kit proposes a suitable tool for rapid detection of the Salmonella typhi

ABSTRACT

Renal artery stenosis now is one of the well recognized causes of Ischemic nephropathy and arterial Hypertension. It is one of the most challenging fields in medicine. Like other vascular anomalies, renal artery stenosis does not always have clinical outcomes. Renal artery stenosis can be seen with accompanying of other vascular abnormalities like arterial duplication, but stenosis of all supplying arteries together is rare. Patient is a 65 years old man, known case of poor control hypertension, chronic renal insufficiency and CVA, presented with diarrhea, repeated vomiting and deterioration of renal function. After clinical evaluation, patient underwent renal angiography and with bilateral duplication and renal arteries stenosis in all four arteries, and then angioplasty was per formed. Renal function returned to normal and blood pressure controlled

ABSTRACT

To report the outcomes of goniotomy in young children with primary congenital glaucoma. This retrospective study included 26 eyes of 19 patients with primary congenital glaucoma who underwent goniotomy as the initial procedure. All patients were aged less than 3 years and had no history of previous ocular surgery. The main outcome measures were intraocular pressure [IOP], cup/disc [C/D] ratio, corneal diameter, success rate and complications. Surgical success was defined as IOP less than 20 mmHg [with or without medications] without progression of disc cupping or increase in corneal diameter. Mean age at the time of diagnosis was 10.5 +/- 12.2 [range 0-36, median 7.5] months. Mean follow-up period was 19.3 +/- 18.3 [range 2-62, median 12] months. Preoperatively, 20 eyes [76.9%] had corneal edema. Mean corneal diameter was 13.60 +/- 0.99 mm [range 12-16 mm] preoperatively which reached 13.98 +/- 1.08 mm [range 12-16 mm] at last follow-up [P=0.174]. Mean IOP was 27.74 +/- 6.07 [range 17-44] mmHg pre-operatively which decreased to 24.44 +/- 7.88 [range 11-40] mmHg at final follow-up [P=0.048]. Surgical success after the first goniotomy was 34.6%. The age of onset, level of IOP, C/D ratio, corneal clarity and corneal diameter did not significantly affect the surgical outcome. There was small hyphema in all patients postoperatively, which resolved rapidly in all except one who required surgical evacuation. Goniotomy is a safe and relatively effective procedure in young children with primary congenital glaucoma, but the success rate was low in our study; which can be attributed to the greater severity of the disease

ABSTRACT

There are many indexes for ranking the health status, therefore it is not a simple work to combine them and determine health degrees of each province, because not all of the indexes are based on equal unity and also too many of indexes and special criteria for selection will affect research results dramatically. This research attempts to combine factor analysis and taxonomy analysis to omit linear correlation between variables, by using 35 indexes of access and efficiency of hygienic and treatment services, fertility population, mortality, food security and nutrition to rank the provinces based on health status. The finding of this research point out that Tehran, Isfahan and central provinces are in a good health status, while this condition is consideral at a little weak point for Ardebil, Golestan and Qom proviences and at critical point for Khoozestan, Sistan and Baluchestan and Kohkiluyeh and Boyer Ahmed proviences

ABSTRACT

To compare the Tono-pen and Schiotz tonometers in measurement of intraocular pressure [IOP] in patients with primary congenital glaucoma. This study was conducted on 38 eyes of 20 patients with primary congenital glaucoma. All measurements were performed under general anesthesia. One minute after receiving Halothane 3% IOP was determined by Tono-pen and then by Schiotz tonometers. Data were analyzed by regression analysis and Bland-Altman bias plot. Mean age of patients was 19.4 +/- 14.5 months and 15 [75%] of them were male. Glaucoma was bilateral in 18 [90%] and unilateral in 2 [10%] subjects. Mean IOP measured by Tono-pen and Schiotz tonometers was 19.39 +/- 8.51 and 18.84 +/- 8.9 mmHg, respectively. These tonometers had good concordance in determination of IOP in primary congenital glaucoma according to the results of regression analysis and Bland-Altman bias plot. Considering the sample size of this study, the Tono-pen and Shiotz tonometers are highly concordant regarding intraocular pressure measurement in children with primary congenital glaucoma
